As you may have been expecting, their budget is being slashed. Some of the County budget items are considered "off-limits". That means that Parks and Rec budget suffers even more. The projected dollar amount is back to 1994 levels. And there are many more parks and facilities now.
Brevard County Parks and Rec has 318 employees. Expected cuts are ... 91 people on the chopping block. Plus, they want the employees to "furlough" one day a month. Currently planned for the first Friday of the month.
But, that's not all. Facility Maintenance will be extremely curtailed. Less mowing and fertilizing, etc. Most of the Portalets will be eliminated. Many of the permanent Restrooms will be locked. (not maintained)
It currently costs about $80 an hour to run one fields lights. Obviously, the amount any partner organization pays is subsidized. So, you may expect that fee to increase.
Recently, they threatened the Libraries. The library group got a significant number of people to show up at a County Commission Workshop meeting. They were all wearing yellow shirts. It had a major impact. The commission decided the Library budget would not be cut.
So, Parks and Rec is asking for our help. Next Thursday evening, July 22, 6:00pm, the Viera government complex. The Commission is holding a workshop. (building C) If we can get enough people to show up all wearing GREEN shirts, maybe we can have as big an impact.
If you care about your parks .....
Spread the word.
Make it happen.
Hope for the best.
